Cars can be a scary prospect, we understand that. Even if you are a skilled driver, it’s likely you probably don’t know an awful lot about the way cars work, and what to do when there is a problem. Well, the good news is that you don’t have to because that’s what we have mechanics for. When you take your car in for a service, you want to understand what’s wrong with it and make sure you get the best possible service.
As such, you might want to come up with some questions to ask your mechanic, in order to understand what the issue is and give yourself peace of mind. The thing is, trying to decipher their jargon can be a bit of a handful! So, we have decided to come up with a helpful list of questions we recommend you ask your mechanic when you take your car in.
Can you show me the problem?
This is one of the best things to ask because it makes everything a lot clearer than simply hearing someone explain it to you. By showing you the fault you understand why the car was causing you problems, and it will expand your knowledge of the vehicle, and understanding of potential future problems. Another benefit is that it actually shows you that the mechanic understands their stuff and knows what they’re doing.
Do I need to get this sorted now?
Let’s be clear, some problems are more serious than others, but it’s difficult to know that if you don’t have the knowledge. Some things are urgent and will need to be fixed immediately, or they might lead to larger problems. However, there are some issues that are very minor, and you could possibly stand to leave for a few weeks. Ask your mechanic as soon as you can, and they will be able to tell you the potential consequences of leaving a problem and not addressing it right away.
Can you prioritize?
Now, often you will find that there could be several things wrong with your car; several things that require tweaking and mending. But, in most cases, only one or two of these issues will actually be urgent. The rest could well be things that could be left for a while, and you should ask your mechanic to prioritize as much as possible. Ask them to focus on the urgent work, and leave the minor things until a later date, so you get your car back quicker.
How did you fix it?
Mechanics are a busy bunch, but some of them might be reasonably accommodating to questions you have. If you’re curious about how they managed to fix the issue with your car, go ahead and ask, the worst they can do is say they don’t have time! By finding out what the problem is you understand your vehicle better, and you’ll develop natural knowledge of how cars work, and the process behind repairing them.
These are just some of the questions you might like to consider when you take your car into the repair garage. We have mechanics so that we aren’t required to know everything about our vehicles! But, the great thing is that, with a few question like the ones above, we can learn basic bits about our cars, which will save time and stress in the future.
