One of the passengers, a woman named Teena Dowd, recalled the feelings on the deck among passengers as they looked at the three poor men from above.
At first, she said, no one actually believed the Pacific Princess could manage to rescue the sailors. “We were on the very top deck, and people were just sort of holding their breath,” she remembered. Anxiety was running so high that you could almost cut the tension in the air with a knife.
