There was a very simple reason for the captain’s insistence. Since he saw no other vessels around, he knew that the Pacific Princess was by default the closest to the scene of whatever was happening.
While the nearest country’s coast guard normally takes over in situations such as these, everyone knew waiting for them was not an option. By the time they got there, it may well already be too late. That’s simply not a risk Captain Slight was willing to take. Not on his watch.
