Maroon 5’s first album was largely about Adam Levine’s ex-partner Jane, and the song Harder to Breathe seems like another song written about the singer’s ex. The band had actually written the song in the face of pressure from their record label to write more songs.
The label wanted a song, so Levine and his bandmates gave them one; literally a song about them. The lyrics talk about how condescending and critical the label was to make sure Maroon 5 got their music out.
