Although some of the other cast members took a long time to uncover, the part of Maddie was specifically written for Cybill Shepherd. Recognizing her position as a top star at the time, Shepherd insisted that her fellow co stars watch three movies made between 1930 and 1940. She wanted them to watch romcoms Bringing Up Baby, Twentieth Century, and His Girl Friday. Shepherd wanted the show to be filled with witty dialogue, and she highlighted those films as being perfect examples of that.
