Mercedes was older than many of the other stars who chose adoption for their children as the actress was 28 years old when she gave birth to her son, Christopher, in 1976. However, the star was about to make a huge decision that would change her life.
Although Mercedes believed she would raise her newborn son, she later decided she didn’t have the right “emotional development or the economic capability” to become a mother. Sadly, Mercedes was worried that she wouldn’t be able to give him the childhood he deserved and was devastated to see him go. Thankfully, as the years passed, the actress learned she wanted to become a mother once again.
