Ever since the 1980 Olympics, Bela’s relationship with the Romanian Government had been strained. The coach had to get away from the country as quickly as he could. It was during the 1981 tour that Bela, his beloved wife, and the choreographer for the Romanian team, Geza Pozsar, all decided to make their move. All three were able to take political asylum in America, but the Karolyis were forced to leave Andrea, their daughter, in Romania with family until both were given shelter. Nadia was, once again, left devastated by her coach having to go.
