After her coach’s dramatic exit, the Romanian government was left terrified that Nadia may decide to follow Bela to the States. The gymnast was deemed too valuable for the country to lose because she was a communist model in her sport. Officials for the country banned Nadia visiting any country in the West, alongside making sure she didn’t appear in any Western media. The government began tapping her phone, as well as reading any of her mail, and being tracked continuously. There was no way to escape for this sporting star.
