From Ocean’s Eleven to Heat and Bonnie and Clyde – we’re in love with heist movies. Even though what Hollywood has been offering us sometimes seems to defy belief, reality may actually trump anything a screenwriter can dream up. From a simple street mugging that netted the thief 373 million dollars to the most successful art thief in history, who’s stolen 1.4 billion dollars in priceless works of art, these are the biggest real-life robberies and heists even Hollywood would pass on because they’re too unrealistic.
[post_page_title]The biggest cash robbery in U.S. history – $28.8 million[/post_page_title]
Starting off with a bang, this is the single largest cash take in American history. It was, unsurprisingly, an inside job. The heist’s mastermind was reportedly Allen Pace, who worked for the Dunbar Armored company.
He, and a few close friends, stormed one of the company’s car facilities on September 12, 1997, and made off with almost $19 million, which in today’s money would be equal to about $28.8 million. Unfortunately for them, the group was eventually caught and ringleader Pace received 20 years in prison.
