[post_page_title]The da Vinci Code heist – $40 million[/post_page_title]
This robbery was seemingly ripped straight out of a Dan Brown novel. Creepy Scottish castle? Check. A priceless Leonard da Vinci masterpiece? Check. Using an axe to rob the place? Check and check.
In August, 2003, two men posing as tourists entered the Drumlanrig Castle in Scotland. Using an axe to get their way, they made their getaway with the Madonna of the Yarnwinder painting. It was valued at $40 million, and was thankfully recovered not long after. Sadly, its owner, the Duke of Buccleuch, died a month beforehand.
