New York City in the 1970s was… a lot different than the Big Apple we know today. Organized crime families reigned supreme, and one of them – the Gambinos – allegedly controlled most of JFK Airport.
Since they did, they reportedly gave permission to a rival gangster, Jimmy “The Gent” Burke of the Lucchese crime family, to carry out a heist there. Burke and his men stormed a Lufthansa building and came away with $6 million in cash – three times what they expected. A war soon broke out over the spoils – and blame.
