A French waiter named Stéphane Breitwieser wanted a change of career, so he became a certified art collector. When that wasn’t interesting enough anymore, he turned to the other side – and became a thief.
He’s not known for any single heist, but over his career, spanning 1995 to 2001, he has managed to steal 239 pieces from more than 170 museums around the world. The total haul? Something like $1.4 billion. He was caught in November, 2011. He wrote an autobiography, aptly titled Confessions of an Art Thief.
