The world famous Carlton Hotel in Cannes is a luxurious French Riviera destination, and has hosted countless Hollywood stars. Glamor like that attracts some undesirables as well, however, and two separate jewel heists took place at the hotel.
The first was in 1994, when three men burst in firing machine guns. They relieved the Carlton’s jewelry store of $60 million in jewels and precious stones. Then, in 2013, it was robbed again, this time for $136 million worth of gemstones and watches. None of the thieves involved were ever caught.
