[post_page_title]The ‘crime of the century’ – $33 million [/post_page_title]
For a time, this next caper was known as the “crime of the century.” One chilly November night in 1983, six robbers broke into a warehouse belonging to Brink’s-MAT at London’s Heathrow Airport.
Using a security guard to get them in, they intended to steal £3 million in cash. Imagine their surprise, then, when they found three tons of gold bullion. They ended up taking £26 million ($33 million) in gold, diamonds, and cash. Most of that gold has never been recovered, and four of the six thieves were never convicted.
