When Elle Woods expresses her desire to go attend Harvard Law School after she is dumped by her boyfriend, her parents’ reaction is anything but supportive, clearly ignorant of their daughter’s intellectual capacity.
Her mother, Mrs Woods, reminds Elle of the time she was the runner-up at a beauty pageant – the ‘Miss Hawaiian Tropics’ contest, and questions why she would want to throw that all away to attend law school. Her father expresses similar sentiments, stating that law school is made for people who are serious, boring and ugly, which, he points out, is not Elle’s character.
