For the longest time, the Royal Family presented themselves as being separate from the public. They expected people to support them without anything in return, which is why they rarely ever stopped to speak to their fans.
That kind of thing wouldn’t swing nowadays, which is why it’s good that Diana made an effort to connect with the public back in the day. By associating with her audience, she showed that the Royal Family could still hold their power without treating everyone else like they meant nothing.
