The disease wasn’t initially apparent to people outside of Fox’s social circle, so he decided to keep it quiet. However, the inner turmoil he faced pushed him to drink heavily. He became depressed and on the verge of alcoholism, but there was a light at the end of the tunnel. Therapy was a great help to him, as was his loyal wife. Fox has often been quoted as saying that his diagnosis strengthened his relationship with Pollan for one excellent reason.
