With Ponti being so much older than Loren, he acted as a bit of a father figure to her too. Loren’s father had been absent from her life, and Ponti stepped into that role from time to time to help the budding film star’s career get off the ground.
Not only was Ponti married, but he also had two children from his previous relationship, making it even harder to get a divorce. Because of the rule in Italy at the time, Loren and Ponti had to elope in Mexico.
