When filming wrapped for Houseboat, Grant sent Loren a huge bunch of yellow roses. Loren decided to use this gift as something to test how much Ponti truly loved her. When Loren and Ponti left the film set on their plane, she boasted to her lover about the flowers that Grant had sent her.
Loren thought if Ponti got angry, then he truly loved her. Ponti got more than a little angry; he exploded and reportedly struck Loren in rage, a sign she took to mean he really did care.
