Due to her first marriage to Carlo in 1957, Loren was in trouble with the law. Not only did they have to leave the country over their marriage, but Carlo was also accused of other crimes.
Ponti was given charges of illegally exporting Italian assets and artwork, evading income tax, and misusing subsidies from the Italia government. Ponti was accused of smuggling famed works by artists like Canaletto, Braque, and Picasso. It was estimated the artworks were worth around $6.7 million, and Ponti was given four years in prison.
