By the time Milton “Mr. Television” Berle got around to hosting Saturday Night Live in 1979, he had been a 66-year veteran of show business, starring on Vaudeville, radio, television, and everywhere else for that matter.
While SNL producer Lorne Michaels stated he had a lot of respect for the era he represented, he was trying to take his show in an entirely different direction. He got strong-armed into having him on, though – and should’ve went with his gut! The 71-year-old comic ignored direction, mugged for the camera, bossed the crew around, and – bizarrely – wandered around backstage in the buff.
