There is clearly a connection between Buffy The Vampire Slayer and Veronica Mars. Not only have several members of the Buffy cast guest starred on the show, even the Buffy creator himself decided to make a cameo.
In a season two episode he shows up very briefly as a car rental manager called Dennis. Rob Thomas, the creator of Veronica Mars, has a somewhat similar writing style to Joss Whedon so perhaps it’s not surprising the two are supportive of each other’s work.
