Batali was born in Seattle, Washington to Italian and French-Canadian immigrants. You may not believe it now, but he grew up making sausage, pickles, and pies – all the dishes a lower income family can afford to make. His father was a farmer and the first of his family to go to college. After his father got a new job they moved to Spain as a family and it was there where his eyes were first opened to the trendier types of food out there. He watched how Spaniards would burn garlic to get that strong charred flavor – a technique that is not used too often anymore. That’s where his story began…
