The anonymity granted by the internet allows for people to open up about issues they wouldn’t talk about even with their closest friends. Putting one’s thoughts out there in front of a complete stranger (or hundreds of them) can feel liberating because even though we can still be judged, the sting of judgement coming from an unknown, faceless person might hurt less than when it comes from a friend, spouse, or family member.
But the logic works both ways. Which means that whoever is sitting on the receiving side of the discussion might reply with a bluntness they don’t use on face to face conversations – they might reserve it for when they’re behind a screen.
