It was in 1965 that the pair decided they want to become serious musicians. They formed a jazz band, with Wes Jacobs – a college friend of Richard’s – joining them. Richard had meanwhile grown into a talented pianist, while Karen took on the role of the band’s drummer and Wes played the tuba and stand-up bass.
Ever the showman, the group was named after Richard as the Richard Carpenter Trio, and so the beginning of their venture into the world of musical acts began.
