[post_page_title]A fear of abandonment[/post_page_title]
Phil Ramone, Karen’s producer at the time, had a completely different interpretation of Richard’s aggressive rejection of his sister’s album: Phil stated that for Richard, the album signaled that Karen was abandoning him. Richard had always believed that they would continue to perform as a duet, and that he would always have control over their career.
For years, Richard had wielded his authority over Karen as an artist, including not telling her what they were singing until they were about to record. With her solo album, his grip was seemingly slipping. As such, he reacted by disparaging it, attemptung to prevent its release.
