Over the years, many people have incorrectly referred to the siblings as The Carpenters; Karen and Richard would make sure they corrected anyone who called them by the wrong name or spelled it incorrectly. It was a conscious decision by both members to exclude the ‘the,’ as they wanted a one-word title for their band.

What’s in a name?

The pair both thought that the name sounded cooler, and were strongly influenced by one-word groups such as Bread. The Carpenters wished to join the fame train with their own hip name.
