He started abusing Quaalude – medication used for its hypnotic and sedative effects – but things soon escalated, and Richard developed a serious problem.

Luckily, Richard admitted he needed help, and spent six weeks in a Kansas rehabilitation center. Following this stint in rehab, Richard decided he needed a break away from the Carpenters to focus on his health.
