During their time as teenagers, the Carpenters relocated to Los Angeles. While Karen was 13 at the time, Richard began attending state college. The change of scene meant the two began to focus on their music a lot more than they ever had before.
Richard made new friends at school who wrote their own songs while he played the piano, whereas Karen discovered she had a hidden talent on the drums. After being distant during their childhood years, their shared passion of music soon brought the pair together.
