During the 1990s, the singer’s hit song Superstar was used as inspiration, when a movie called Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story was released. Instead of being a live-action film, it used Barbie dolls to portray the characters and tell the story of Karen’s final years.
The movie aimed to highlight what women go through to achieve the looks they want, using Karen’s story as a prime example. As Richard and the rest of their family were portrayed in a negative light, he was quick to announce his disapproval of the film. He even went as far as to ban it from being circulated, due to its use of the Carpenters’ music.
