Although Tracy was uncertain about how the objects had moved, she assumed at first that it was simply her kids ignoring or forgetting the house rules, and leaving things lying around haphazardly.
It made sense that they might have forgotten or just not bothered to put things away, given the usual approach of children to neatness and order. However, when Tracy confronted her kids about their lackadaisical approach to tidiness, they assured her that they had absolutely been following the house rules, and putting things where they should be.
