Ernest Hemingway was a novelist and short story writer who penned classics such as The Sun Also Rises and For Whom the Bell Tolls. In 1918, while World War I was raging, Hemingway signed up to be an ambulance driver for the Red Cross. He was sent to Italy and on his very first day, he was sent to pick of the remains of female workers at a munitions factory that exploded. The author wrote of his traumatic experiences in the book, Death in the Afternoon.
