Harry Belafonte is a singer, songwriter, social activist and actor. He popularized the Carribean style of music but he also recorded music in many other genres. Before he became famous, Belafonte joined the Navy immediately following his high school graduation and he served in World War II. Belafonte credited his time in the Navy for making him realize the importance of living life to the fullest. Belafonte went onto star in films such as Island in the Sun and Odds against Tomorrow.
