Although most of what makes up this movie are entirely fictional, the setting itself isn’t. In fact, the model for HMS Surprise was actually built out of real ship schematics from its time. It’s not the exact replica of the real-life ship, but it’s close enough to pass muster. At least, they definitely played with realism on this one. The fight scenes also displayed historically accurate representations of naval battles, with cool-headed captains, aristocratic kids, and other naval practices in its time.
