Actors aim to do everything they can to get properly into character, and Sam Pickens knew that he had to make a real impression on the set of Blazing Saddles.
He was entirely committed to his character of Taggart and wanted to ensure that he was comfortable with his surroundings and the new additions to his outfit. Because of this, Pickens would often opt to sleep outside on set, with his Winchester rifle in hands. Well, it definitely seemed to work, because Pickens was the star of the show.
