When he first created the idea of Blazing Saddles, Mel Brooks immediately knew who he wanted to play Lili von Shtupp. He wanted Madeline Kahn. Brooks had seen her work in the past and was incredibly impressed with her work ethic and her acting talent and called her in for an audition.
Yet, Madeline was concerned when Mel Brooks asked to see her legs in more detail during the audition. She was initially taken aback but complied when Brooks explained that she was going to be a parody of the leggy actress, Marlene Dietrich.
