Amazingly, Madeline wasn’t the only actor picked specifically for one of Mel Brooks’ characters. While in the production process, Mel had it in his mind that he wanted the comedian, Richard Pryor, to take on the role of Sheriff Bart.
However, his thoughts were not matched by the executives at Warner Bros, who were dubious about Pryor’s work ethic. As an alternative, the studio suggested Mel use Cleavon Little as his Bart. After seeing Little in action, Mel changed his mind and knew that Cleavon was the perfect fit.
