One of the main reasons critics come down hard on Blazing Saddles is because of the excessive use of the N-word in the script. However, it seems that it wasn’t just the fans and the critics who had a problem with this.
During filming, Burton Gilliam became very apprehensive about using such an offensive word directed at Cleavon Little. Thankfully, his worries were quickly put to rest, as Little told Gilliam that it was okay to do so. After all, he knew that Gilliam wouldn’t say that to him in real life.
