As a true stickler for his work, Mel Brooks knew that he wanted Blazing Saddles to be absolutely perfect. To do this, he made sure that every line of his script was there for a purpose.
He wanted them to make fans laugh, he wanted them to make them think, or he wanted them to have hidden meanings. One of the most notable quotes within this movie was uttered by a Mexican passer-by, who shouted, “Mongo! Santa Maria!” This quote was a direct reference to the popular Cuban jazz superstar, Mongo Santamaria.
