Shelly briefly appears as Richard’s girlfriend on the show, though he is annoyed by her presence. She is an eternal optimist and even when Richard breaks up with her, she is happy and says that couples who break up have a higher tendency to stay committed to one another when they get back together. As a result, Richard has a hard time breaking up with her and even enlists the help of Charlie by asking him to go out with Shelly, so Richard can accuse her of cheating.
