This one’s a chin-stroker. Should we include a character written with the express purpose of being (as one critic put it) “annoying and thoroughly unlikable”? Yes, yes we should. Diane Chambers, college student-turned-bar waitress, was the worst kind of smart – a pretentious know-it-all with very little actual life experience. To her credit, Shelley Long played the character perfectly. We honestly don’t get what Sam saw in her, or why he still wanted her after she kept turning down his marriage proposals. Finally, the show’s producers actually credit Long leaving the show with saving it from cancelation, so…
