Before HGTV signed Chip to the show, he had his own real estate company, Magnolia Realty, with two partners John L. Lewis and Richard L. Clark. Knowing he was about to get a big payday, he bought the both of them out for $2,500 – but they later felt that he scammed them, and eventually sued him for a lot more money.
