Carmel is a general case manager at the homeless shelter. She explained that the stereotypes that many people believe about homeless people are anything but true. She said, “These people are ready to work and they want to get housed.
They came from being housed and they just had some bad luck and unfortunate circumstances.” Homeless people are just like us and many even had good jobs until they fell on hard times and found themselves in a very difficult situation.

One of the men in the shelter that day, Michael, put his life into perspective and explained that he is only after the basics in life. He said, “I don’t need a lot of money, I don’t need a fancy car, just getting some place to survive.”
Another one of the participants was Guadalupe who painted a very harsh picture of the reality of being homeless. She said, “We have to stay up all night long watching each other’s back.”
