Steven is another homeless person who participated in the surprise at Ascencia. He explained that from his experiences, he believes the general public does not want to even come in contact with homeless people.
He said, “People don’t want you around, they think you stink, they think you smell, you’re going to steal something.” While many people believe homeless people are after people’s money or that they are unhygienic, the truth is they are regular people.

Some of the workers at the shelter explained how being homeless can affect every aspect of their life including a homeless person’s personality. The director of programs at the shelter, Dr. Laura Duncan explained, “When people have lost everything, they lose their dignity and their self-respect.”
Homelessness goes so much deeper than just not having a place to live. It makes the people it affects feel worthless and like they are not good enough to escape their situation.
