It wasn’t long before Bes was thought of as the patron of childbirth and the home, as well as being the god of war. It’s said Bes would protect women giving birth by shaking his rattle, shouting, and dancing to ward off any evil spirits.
As if that wasn’t enough already, Bes was also said to make children laugh without parents ever knowing. The random smiles were thought to be Bes pulling funny faces. It’s believed people needed to tattoo the god onto their skin if they wanted his full protection in life.
