Because Pearl had been starved of nutrients in the womb, she was overrun with complications that were making it increasingly hard for her to survive. Most notably, she had a patent ductus arteriosus in her heart – which means that the blood was not flowing as it should around her heart. However, this was just the start. Pearl was also suffering from a pulmonary hemorrhage, a bleed in her brain, as well as a nasty infection that just couldn’t be shifted. The odds were not looking good.
