The Lord of the Rings and Indiana Jones star was not producers’ first choice to play the professor on the sci-fi show – Hector Elizondo was, but he passed on the role because it was filmed in Canada.
They probably wished he’d have accepted, as Rhys-Davies didn’t seem to be a fan of his own show, calling the writing “incomprehensible gibberish” and the writer unintelligent and useless. They seem to have taken the hint, and midway through the third season the professor was shot and killed, leading to a swift exit from the show.
