Playing privileged California girl Marissa was the breakout role for the young Barton, but she didn’t seem to appreciate the opportunity. Quite the contrary, in fact.
The character was immensely popular, but she is said to have looked down on working in television, not to mention partied excessively with fellow celebs Nicole Richie, Lindsay Lohan, and Paris Hilton. Even her on-screen dad Tate Donovan she was the show’s “biggest diva.” She herself admitted to “spiraling out of control,” which led to her character perishing in a car accident (notice a trend yet?) on the show’s third season.
