While Sharon was livid from the discovery (as well as several thousands of people on Facebook), Walmart immediately began to look into the accusations. After researching the claims, they concluded the answer to the mystery item was a barcode that had been entered incorrectly. Walmart stated that while Sharon Bufford had endured a bad experience from the store, all other customers have only been paying for their own items. They also reported they would be training all staff members to look for mistakes just in case it happened again.
