After the passing of her husband, Mrs. Everdeen goes on a downwards spiral and is temporarily unable to care for her daughters, Katniss and Primrose, which causes Katniss to step up and become Prim’s caretaker.
She is greatly distressed when Prim is reaped in the Hunger Games lottery and when Katniss offers herself as a tribute. She recovers her strength through helping others, and cares after many people, including Katniss and Gale when they are injured.
